The Difference Between LED and LCD Television

LCDs do not generate their own light. It needs a separate illumination source which is known as backlight. Most LCDs use Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) as their backlight. On the other hand, LED TV simply uses LED (light emitting diodes) as a backlight. The decrease in the prices of LEDs had TV makers use this instead of CCFL.

TV manufacturers prefer using LED since it use edge-mounted designs which place the diodes at the borders of the display. This makes LED TVs much thinner in form. Consumers are more fascinated in thinner televisions so TV makers are focused in producing thinner TVs. With LED TV, it can produce deeper black levels and can produce brighter images than LCD.

LED TVs are more durable and have longer life span than LCD. The duration of how long an LCD TV last depends on the backlighting bulb. The bulbs normally run for 60,000 hours in regular fluorescent-lit LCD panels. Some manufacturers claim that life of LCD is 100,000 hours but normally the color hue starts to degrade in LCD TVs after 20,000 hours. The expected lifespan of LED TVs is over 100,000 hours.

In power consumption, LED TVs use lesser power. Since LCD TV use CCFL lighting, it consumes 40% more in energy consumption. LED TV is more energy-efficient than LCD TV. Environmentalist would prefer to use LED TV since no mercury is used in the lights.

When it comes to price, LED TV is more expensive than LCD TV. The better picture that it provides makes LED TV costlier. LCD TVs are already established in the market and are produced in much larger number than LED TV. Since TV manufacturers are adopting LED TVs, there will come a time that LED TV and LCD TV will nearly be the same in price.

In purchasing television, consumers must think not just the price but the quality and the lifespan of the product.
